Nondestructive testing processes are examinations that don't destroy the part nor compromise its soundness, making it a cost-effective testing option for forgings. From time-to-time, however, more information is needed, requiring destructive testing. These tests do destroy a piece of the forging but provide more data and yield details that are easier to interpret.

Forging is a science, but it is not an exact science, so it's important to know your finish dimensions to ensure your forging meets your needs. A request should include an accurate, complete drawing and, if possible, details of the finish machined part requirements. These details allow our technically trained sales engineers to create an effective process plan.

Often, when provided with a complete understanding of your needs, our process engineers and forge development consultants can recommend processes, including Scot Forge proprietary forging methods, that offer closer tolerances and dimensions on forgings, enhancing component properties while saving time and money.

Material Properties

Typical heat treatment processes performed at Scot Forge include aging, annealing, normalizing, quenching and tempering. Other, less common techniques include precipitation hardening for superalloys such as titanium and some stainless steel grades.

So, whether you would like to soften material for machinability or strengthen it for mission critical applications, Scot Forge is capable of heat treating anything we forge.
